Bruno Fernandes Defends Cristiano Ronaldo: “He Deserves the Respect of All Portuguese People”

· · ⏱ 2 min read

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has called for unity and respect amid the growing controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and the national team.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Norway, Fernandes revealed that he had spoken directly with Ronaldo and stressed that the veteran forward remains one of the biggest figures in Portuguese football.

“Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the respect of all Portuguese people, regardless of who likes him more or likes him less,” Fernandes said.

Fernandes also rejected suggestions that Ronaldo’s situation had created divisions within the Portugal squad. According to the midfielder, the players are focused on their responsibilities on the pitch and are staying away from the dispute.

He described Ronaldo as the greatest symbol of Portugal’s national team and football, pointing to the enormous contribution the 41-year-old has made to the country and the sport globally.

Ronaldo’s Portugal Future in Focus

The comments come after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following a dispute surrounding his selection for the team.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway before subsequently leaving the camp. Portugal then defeated Denmark 4-2 without their captain, adding further attention to questions about Ronaldo’s future with the national side.

The situation has divided opinion among Portuguese supporters, with debate growing over whether Ronaldo will continue representing his country.

Fernandes, however, believes the focus should be on unity rather than taking sides.

“There are no divisions in the national team,” he said, emphasizing that Portugal must remain one despite the controversy surrounding Ronaldo.

The Manchester United midfielder also expressed hope that the situation would eventually be resolved peacefully and that Ronaldo would not make a decision about his international future while emotions remain high.

For now, Ronaldo’s next chapter with Portugal remains uncertain, but Fernandes’ message is clear: whatever happens next, the former Ballon d’Or winner’s place in Portuguese football history remains firmly established.
